Accessible Services

Metropolitan Area Commuter System (MACS) Transit

  • All MACS Transit buses are fully accessible.
  • Passengers who use mobility devices, walkers, or have difficulty climbing stairs will find kneeling, low floor, and ramp access on every MACS Transit bus.
  • Voice announcements and a reader board convey stop locations
  • Priority seating in the front of the bus is set aside for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities
  • Bus operators are trained to meet the needs of passengers with disabilities by assisting passengers when boarding and exiting the bus and securing wheelchairs.
  • Reduced fares are available for individuals with disabilities and Medicare cardholders.

Van Tran

Van Tran paratransit service is the Fairbanks North Star Borough's demand response ADA service, which meets the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It is provided to those people whose physical, cognitive, or sensory disabilities prevent them from using the MACS Transit System, the fixed-route bus system. Disability alone does not qualify an individual for Van Tran service. Eligibility is based on the applicant's functional capabilities.

Other Accessibility Policies

  • You may travel with your respirator, concentrator, and portable oxygen.
  • Service animals are welcome on board buses and vans and in our facilities. They must be kept under the control of the passenger at all times.
  • Public information is available in alternative formats upon request.

Reasonable Modification Policy

Passengers with disabilities may request modifications to current service procedures to access the service. To make a request, please email Transportation or call Transportation at 907-459-1196. Please submit requests at least the day before the trip. MACS Transit will not charge additional fees for passengers requiring reasonable modifications.
